If conservative people nowadays find condoms and contraceptive pills a horrible form of birth control methods, what then could be the ancient contraceptives used before – crocodile poo mixed with honey, powdered weasel testicles, coca-cola douche, and pig intestines used as ancient condom! Women were also advised of insane methods like drinking the Blacksmith water or hot mercury in order to prevent pregnancy. Imagine the horrible side effects of those methods like brain damage, kidney failure, and even death. Good thing these methods are no longer bought over the counter! Here is a list of the 10 Most Insane Birth Control Methods!
The birth control method using lemon was first commonly used in ancient Jewish communities, which was believed to contain spermicidal properties. The women would then soak spongers in lemon juice before inserting them to their vagina - while the sponge itself acted as a physical barrier, the citric acid will kill the sperm that are able to pass through. Lemon and lime-juice was also recommended as douches within minutes after intercourse, while some (especially Casanova) use the rind of half a lemon as a primitive diaphragm for women.
9- Gold and SIlver Diaphragms
Another type of insane birth control method in the form of diaphragm are gold and silver cervical caps used during ancient Greece. The idea was to make a little thimble made out of gold, silver, or ivory, and then inserted to the cervix. There are no guaranteed results except unusual odors and discharge, infections, and Toxic Shock Syndrome, and even pregnancy because they are more likely to fall out during intercourse.
3- Coca-Cola Douche
Not only ancient civilizations had their share of insane birth control methods, but even in modern history, there had already been quite a few - such as the Coca-Cola douche. It was first circulated in 1950-1960, where Coca Cola can were experimented as a spermicide because of its carbonic acid, and was used through its usual shake-and-shoot method. In 2008, an experiment was conducted at Harvard Medical School's birth control laboratory by Anderson, Hill, and Umpierre. They made a concoction of four different types of Coke with sperm in order to test its alleged contraceptive properties. It was found out that Diet Coke was able to kill all sperm within one minute, but the newly introduced coke did not annihilate 41% of them.
Another insane contraceptive is by the use of seed wool introduced by Ebers Papyrus in 1550 BCE. It goes by grinding dates and acacia tree bark, mixed in honey to make a paste, and putting it all in a seed wool, which will then be inserted to the cervix. The cotton serves as a physical barrier between the sperm and the cervix, while the mixture contains spermicide properties. On the other hand, during the era of American slavery, women will chew the bark of cotton root for the belief that it will interfere with possible pregnancy - specifically the corpus luteum which is responsible for progesterone production to prepare the uterus for the fertilized egg.
Known as the oldest condom in history, animal intestines (especially from pigs) were used as condoms by men. Before using it, the intestines were cleansed and soaked in warm milk. There are no records to show on how this insane birth control method was started, though.
5- Wild Carrot and Lace
Otherwise known as Queen Anne's Lace, this birth control method was already used for over two millennia ago, during the ages of Hippocrates, similar to a "morning after" contraceptive. The seeds in this wild carrot serves as a block for progesterone production of the body; hence, impeding the implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus. It was used within eight hours of exposure to sperm. However, although quite effective, it has also a number of side effects like constipation and can even be mistaken as the poison hemlock!
4- Weasel Testicles
During the Dark Ages, one of the most insane birth control method was using weasel testicles. The testicles are to be powdered and be used as a douche by women, while other are into more extreme belief that even hanging the severed testicles of weasels will already serve as a prevention to pregnancy. Clearly, it was not at all effective.
3- Blacksmith Water
Blacksmith water was not only then used to clean tools used by men to hunt, but they are also extraordinarily in demand as a birth control method. According to Soranus, a known Greek gynecologist during the 2nd century, women were advised to drink the water that blacksmiths used to cool their metals in order to prevent pregnancy. And even during the WWI, women were volunteering themselves to work in a lead factory, so that they may avail themselves of blacksmith water and be sterile. However, it has caused many alarming side effects such as kidney failure, seizure, neurological problems, and even death.
2- Crocodile Poo
Ancient Egypt also had its share with one of the most insane birth control method - the use of crocodile dung. They use the manure of crocodile in order to create a sperm barrier between ejaculation and the cervix. The manure was mixed with honey in order to create a paste and inserted to the cervix of women!
When mercury was first discovered, many ancient civilizations like the Assyrians, Egyptians, and the Greeks, were fascinated about its properties and was thought to be a great contribution to medicine because it might have special preventive and curative properties. Other than using it to treat skin infections, it was also used as a birth control method. It was in ancient China, when it was first used by women who are convinced that drinking hot mercury would prevent pregnancy. Of course, the method resulted to horrible effects because of the toxicity of mercury, such as kidney and lung failure, brain damage, and even death.
