Training exotic animals is always an exciting job and a dangerous one too. People who are at close encounters with predators are at great risk of getting attacked or preyed on. Here are 10 of the most shocking cases of “animal attacks”. Bengal tigers attacked their trainer during a circus show.
A trainer who was drowned to death by a whale during a demonstration and the famous “Crocodile Hunter” who was stabbed to death by a stingray.
10- ALPHA MALE CHIMPS ATTACK STUDENT
Andrew Oberle was studying chimp behavior at the Goodall Institute in South Africa when he was attacked by chimps. Andrew was standing in a restricted area when he was mauled by a group of chimps. Oberle was dragged for about half a mile by alpha males, named Nikki and Amadeus.
These chimps have strengths six times stronger than humans. Oberle endured severe cuts and wounds in his head and face exposing his skull and facial bones. He even lost parts of his fingers, according to reports. Oberle, who is an animal lover, was brought to the hospital for surgery, fortunately, he survived.
9- WHALE KILLED TRAINER DAWN BRANCHEAU
Tilikum is a 12,000 pound, 25 foot Orca whale trained by Dawn Brancheau, killed its trainer in front of spectators during a demonstration. The attack happened at SeaWorld Shamu Stadium in Orlando on February 24, 2010. Tilikum grabbed Dawn Brancheau by the arm drowning her to death while horrified spectators looked on. Tilikum has also been involved in the deaths of two people; a trainer in British Columbia and a man trespassing on the Shamu property.
8- ROCKY- THE GRIZZLY BEAR BIT STEPHAN MILLER TO DEATH
Stephan Miller is a trainer at the Predators in Action, an animal training facility that trains wild and exotic animals for film and television appearances. In 2008, the media was shocked by a horrendous grizzly attack. Miller who was conducting a training exercise with Rocky, a 5-year old Grizzly Bear, bit him on the neck, killing him instantly. Rocky was supposed to be euthanized following the attack, but the PETA and other animal rights groups, called for Rocky to be spared.
7- A GRIZZLY PARTIALLY EATEN TIMOTHY TREADWELL AND HIS GIRLFRIEND
In 2003, American bear enthusiast and environmentalist Timothy Treadwell was killed in Katmai National Park in Alaska. Treadwell had spent thirteen consecutive summers at Katmai Natioanal Park living among the grizzlies. At the end of his 13th summer in the park, he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard went missing and were found dead and were partially eaten by a grizzly bear.
6- CHARLA NASH WAS MAULED TO DEATH BY A CHIMP
Travis was a male common chimpanzee and an animal actor owned by Sandra Herold. The chimp had appeared in American television shows and commercials including spots for Coca-Cola and Old Navy. He had also appeared on The Maury Povich Show, The Man Show, and a television pilot that featured Sheryl Crow and Michael Moore.
In February 2009, Travis grievously mauled Charla Nash, a friend of Herold. Nash sustained horrendous injuries and severe lacerations on the face and both hands, she even lost her sight. Travis died of a gunshot, fired by a police officer after the chimp tried to attack the officers who were there to rescue Charla Nash.
5- MANTICORE, A WHITE TIGER BIT ROY HORN IN THE NECK
Roy Horn and Siegfried, are popular German-American, former contemporary magicians and entertainers, famous for their white lions and white tigers performances. Their Las Vegas shows were always a hit, until the attack in 2003. Horn suffered critical injuries following a bite to the neck by Manticore , a 7-year old white Bengal tiger.
The duo was performing at the Mirage in Las Vegas when the attack occurred. Horn was critically injured and sustained severe blood loss, fortunately, Horn survived the attack but has been left partially paralyzed. Manticore died of an illness last March 19, 2014, aged 17.
4- CHRISTIAN WALLISER WAS MAULED BY THREE BENGAL TIGERS
Christian Walliser, an experienced animal trainer running a circus show, was attacked by three Bengal tigers when he stumbled at a dinner circus show in Hamburg in 2009. He was pinned to the ground by the three tigers and they started digging their teeth into Walliser’s head and upper body, in front of horrified attending guests.
Walliser sustained serious injuries but he survived the attack, thanks to the other trainers who were quick to rescue the poor guy. They used fire extinguishers and water cannons to force the animals back to their cage.
3- CROCODILE ATTACKED JOURNALIST OFIR DRORI
Ofir Drori is an Israeli writer and wildlife activist based in Central Africa. Drori was attacked by a three metre crocodile while canoeing in the shallow waters of the Omo river. The gruesome encounter happened in December 2013. The crocodile dug its razor-like teeth into Drori’s leg and dragged him out into the deep water.
Miraculously Drori managed to escape, but his leg was severely injured. Drori managed to slow the profuse bleeding from his leg, called for help, and escaped death.
2- AN ELEPHANT KILLED A 64-YEAR-OLD MAN
A trainer died when the elephant he was looking after attacked him at a resort in Bandipur National Park’s N Begur range in the early hours of Tuesday. The 64-year-old Narayana, died on the way to hospital.
Some elephant trainers use torture in order to make the “mammoths” people-friendly. The elephants are often chained inside tiny cages, routinely beaten with ‘sharp instruments, and left without food or water for days. The mistreatment of animals is a major factor in their cruel behaviors.
1- STEVE IRWIN WAS STABBED NUMEROUS TIMES BY A STINGRAY
Steve Irwin, famously known as the “Crocodile Hunter” was attacked and killed by a Stingray. Steve Irwin is the host of the docu-series “The Crocodile Hunter”, who died after numerous stabbings in the chest by a stingray barb while filming the Ocean’s Deadliest, an underwater documentary film.
On September 4, 2006, while snorkeling at Batt Reef near Port Douglas, Queensland, Irwin was filming a stingray in chest-deep water. The fish reacted to Irwin striking him several hundred times in the body with its tail spine piercing through his heart and he bled out. Crew members pulled him onto the boat, administered CPR, and rushed him to shore.
But Irwin did not survive the attack, he died at the scene. This tragic attack was caught on tape, and a copy was reviewed by the police. All copies of the video were destroyed at his family’s request.
