Pregnancy after menopause is as impossible as the virgin birth, and as equally impossible as giving birth or being pregnant at five years old. In light of the recent Mother’s Day celebration, here are the most astonishing stories of motherhood, as far as giving birth. The world’s youngest confirmed mother in medical history is Lina Medina. She had given birth at the age of five years, seven months, and 17 days in May 1939.

A woman from the United States, named Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Gutierrez, also known as the “Octomom” had given birth to eight infants in January 2009. And the woman who had the most number of children, according to the Guinness Book of Records, was Mrs. Vassilyeva from Russia who had given birth to 69 children from 27 pregnancies during the 18th century.

Now the world’s oldest mom is from India, named  Omkari Panwar who had given birth at 70. Before she had given birth in 2008, Panwar wasn’t the only one who had given birth decades after menopause. Meet ten of the world’s oldest mothers.


10- Elizabeth Buttle – 60 Years Old

Elizabeth Ann Jeffrey “Liz” Buttle, was 60 years old when she gave birth to her son, Joseph. She made headlines as the 60 year old was one of oldest moms in Wales to have given birth in 1997. Although several babies have already been born to moms older than 50, Liz was 60 when she had her second child.

At that time Liz had already a 41-year-old daughter Brenda, and three grandchildren. Elizabeth’s husband left her as a single mum after controversies sparked that she had baby Joe out of “in-vitro fertilization”, which she lied about claiming that her pregnancy was a miracle. Allegedly the egg donor was her own her daughter Brenda.

9- Frieda Birnbaum – 60 Years Old

Frieda Birnbaum, the New Jersey mom is the oldest woman in the United States to give birth to twins. At age 60, Frieda gave birth to twin boys named Joshua and Jarrett. Birnbaum already had kids before the twins; she had her son Jaeson when she was 26, and then had a second child Alana at 30. After her two children moved out of the house, the couple wanted to have new babies and went to several fertility clinics.

At 53, she became pregnant through in-vitro fertilization and gave birth to her son Ari. But the couple did not stop there. They wanted to have more babies, but doctors in the United States refused to perform the procedure because of her age. They flew to South Africa to find fertility clinics that would help her get pregnant again. Birnbaum was able to get pregnant at 59 and gave birth to twins at 60.

8- Patricia Rashbrook – 62 Years Old

Another of Britain’s oldest mothers to give birth is Patricia Rashbrook. She travelled to Russia to receive in-vitro fertilization treatment, and gave birth to a son in 2006. Rashbrook, who is a psychiatrist based in Lewes, East Sussex already had three adult children from her first marriage before giving birth to her baby boy.

She and husband John Farrant, a first-time dad with this pregnancy spent approximately £10,000 for the IVF treatment. After several attempts, Rashbrook got pregnant using IVF and a donor egg. She was 62 years old when she gave birth.

7- Rosanna Della Corte – 63 Years Old

Rosanna Della Corte stirred controversy and outraged many including the Vatican after giving birth to a baby at age of 63. Rosanna had a son named Riccardo when she was 42. Her first born died in a motorcycle accident in 1991. Out of desperation from the sudden death of their son, the couple went on to adopt but was turned down because of their age. A Ukrainian clinic helped them get pregnant through IVF treatment and a donor egg.


Despite several hate mails and abusive phone calls, Della Corte stayed courageous and strong said “…God had taken a child from me but God had also answered our prayers and given us another child.” In 1994 at 63 years old, she gave birth to her son and named him Riccardo.

6- Papathiammal Subramaniam – 64 Years Old

Papathiammal Subramaniam, a 64 year old woman from India gave birth to her baby in 2004. She was one of the oldest first-time mothers in India at the time. The husband was 74 at the time, and the couple were married for more than 40 years, childless. Her baby was conceived though the blastocyst method of IVF. Doctors used the egg donated by a 30-year old relative and fertilized it with her husband’s sperm. After birth, the bay had to spend some time in an incubator under close observation.

5- Adriana Iliescu – 66 Years Old

Adriana Iliescu is now 75 years old, and a mother of 9-year old Eliza Maria. Iliescu became the oldest mother to have given birth in January 2005 at the age of 66 years old. She is a retired University lecturer based in Romania. She attempted to reverse menopausal symptoms in 1995 by taking hormone treatments. But it took 10 years before she got pregnant through in-vitro fertilization in 2004.

The sperm and the egg were from two anonymous donors and Iliescu became pregnant with triplets. One of the three fetuses died after ten weeks, but some complications led to the death of another fetus that caused the surgery to be moved forward and Eliza was born. The surviving baby remained at the hospital for six weeks after birth.

4- Bhateri Devi – 66 Years Old

Bhateri Devi gave birth via caesarean in a hospital in India, in 2010. She was 66 years old when she gave birth to triplets. After decades of living childless, Devi and her 70-year old husband got pregnant through in-vitro fertilization using a donor egg and the husband’s sperm. The first time parents were gifted with two baby boys and a baby girl.

3- Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara – 66 Years Old

María del Carmen Bousada de Lara was a Spanish woman who gained worldwide attention when she became the world’s oldest mother in December 2006. She has never been married, and decided to have children after her mother died in 2005. Bousada gave birth to twin baby boys, Christian and Pau, by caesarean section.

She was 66 years old when she gave birth. Bousada received her fertility treatment from a United States clinic. She lied about her age so that she could receive IVF treatment, as the fertility clinic’s maximum age for treatment is 55. Bousada sold her house for $59,000 to pay for the treatment.

She gave birth to twins, making her the oldest woman to give birth according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Bousada died of ovarian cancer three years after giving birth.


2- Rajo Devi Lohan – 69 Years Old

Rajo Devi Lohan was 69 years old when she gave birth to triplets, through in-vitro fertilization. The couple took out loans to pay for the treatment. Through the help of a fertility doctor, Anurag Bishnoi, Lohan became pregnant. Unfortunately she had a rough pregnancy, her womb ruptured and she suffered internal bleeding, and she also had to have a surgery to remove an ovarian cyst, and her overall health deteriorated. Fortunately, Lohan survived and expressed her great desire to live longer to see her children get married.

1- Omkari Panwar – 70 Years Old

The Panwar couple was desperate to have a son and sought the help of fertility doctors to get pregnant. Omkari and her husband Charan already had two adult daughters, but the couple was desperate to have a male heir. They paid for IVF treatment by taking out a credit card loan and mortgaged a piece of land.

In 2008, Omkari Panwar became the oldest mother in the world when she gave birth to twins, at 70. The Panwar twins; a boy and a girl were both born premature, both weighing about two pounds. Charan was so happy to see their new babies claimed “The treatment cost me a fortune but the birth of a son makes it all worthwhile. I can die a happy man and a proud father”, he said.
